SOULSPEAK is a contemporary version of the ancient oral poetry used by all cultures prior to reading and writing. In the mid 1990’s I got together with a poet by the name of Justin Spring in a non-profit organization which Justin had founded called the SARASOTA POETRY THEATRE, which later evolved into SOULSPEAK/SOULMOVES.

In an effort to make our own poetry and performances more immediate we stumbled back through the looking glass of time and what evolved between us over the next few years was a spontaneous, antiphonal (speaker/responder) poetry created with music. Not only did we create this poetry ourselves, but we created simple techniques to teach it to others: most specifically at-risk children (from 4th grade) and adults, in a multitude of populations. It is hard to explain what Soulspeak really is. It can be done alone or with others. Even when it is at its darkest, it is beautiful. It is healing, and it changes lives. The best way to explore Soulspeak is to simply listen and feel.
